I am so excited to be a finalist in the UVA Data Science Data As ART competition! @uvadatascience My piece is entitled, "LA AQI 1980-2024" (approx 28"x28" on paper) It is a spiral chart of the Air Quality Index figures for every day from 1980 (the earliest available reliable data) to January 15, 2024. Each day is a tick that is neutral (a good day!) to yellow (not so bad) to orange (not so good) to dark red (really bad). The good news about this specific metric is that the story gets better! Los Angeles, and the surrounding cities, are known to be one of the most polluted areas in the US. I remember many air quality warning days when I was growing up there. Surprising to me is that we have made it better! There are still some bad days in summer. We have made the air less harmful through collective action, directed policy, and improved technology. Other metrics might still be unhealthy for this large metropolis, but this shows we can reduce our negative impact if we try. #DataVisialization #DataIsArt #AirQualityIndex #LosAngeles #uva
